4Dicta 22T Single Speed FreewheelJun 27, 2011
By harvey m. woien
The Dicta single-speed (SS) freewheels are not the best quality and somewhat noisy, but they do the job quite well. The ratcheting pawls, which allow freewheeling, are noisier than the Shimano SS freewheels, But not as loud or annoying as some modern free hubs. The sound is just slightly noticeable when riding. There is some bearing rattle/rumble when coasting, but noticeable only when the bike is on a workstand and the wheel is spinning freely. Since these bearings operate only when coasting, the noise should not objectionable.

No provision is made on these units for removal from the hub. However, you can correct this yourself by filing two notches, 180 degrees apart, on the body of the freewheel before installation. Locate the notches on the inner rim of the threaded body on the side that is opposite the hub. The body thread depth is way more than any hub (multispeed or flip-flop) that I have ever seen, so don't worry about damaging two or three of the threads. To remove, place a punch or chisel into one notch and hit it so the impulse acts tangentially in the counter-clockwise direction. After a few hits, move the punch to the opposite slot and give it a few more whacks. Repeat as required until the freewheel starts to unscrew from the hub.

Removal will be lot easier if you lubricate the threads of both the hub and the freewheel before installation. Also grease up the face of the freewheel that hits the hub where the threads end. Use silicon grease or white lithium grease.

Tip: Both fixed and single speed drive trains do best when the largest possible cogs and chain rings are used. If possilbe, use a 52 tooth ring and a 20 or 22 tooth cog or freewheel (or whatever your prefered gear ratio requires). Don't worry about mixing 1/8 inch thick cogs and 3/32 inch rings (or the opposite), just use an 1/8 inch chain.
